Google Giving Away Phones!

I received an email a few days ago saying that Google was going to send me a Nexus One, because I had an application in the Android Market with a rating of 3.5 stars or higher, and over 5000 downloads. It sounded too good to be true, but it appears to be legitimate, as reported on TechCrunch.

According to Google, the intent of this giveaway is to stimulate Android development. Google would like existing apps kept up to date, and new ones written. Their generosity seems to be having its intended effect, at least on me, because now I find myself trying to come up with ideas for new Android applications, or features to add to my existing one.

Thanks to everyone who downloaded and rated PostBot. I’m glad some of you have found it useful.

PostBot 1.1.0 Open-sourced

PostBot 1.1.0 has been released. It is code-equivalent to PostBot 1.0.5; however, this version has been built from the new repository on Google Code, and has been released under the GNU GPLv3.

I have had several inquiries from users about the possibility of contributing to PostBot, and now this is possible.

I welcome contributions from the community. Please help me make this the best WordPress app in the Android Market!

Because of complications adding tags, I decided to put out an interim 1.0.5 release after all, with horizontal image alignment.

So I went a little beyond the minor changes required for PostBot 1.0.5, and am adding support for image alignment and tags.

Coming along pretty well, just have to switch some XMLRPC calls around and do a lot of testing! Hopefully next weekend it’ll be out.

Another minor update to improve PostBot’s handling of large images.

With this update, PostBot can handle images up to 3.5 MB in size, and will provide a meaningful error message if an image is too large for it.

For reference: in my experience, images taken with the Dream’s built-in camera application are usually around 300kB, and images taken with SnapPhoto using the “large” profile and 100% quality can be up to around 1MB. The largest image I have seen from my 7-megapixel camera was just over 2MB.

I’m going to use it for a few days, and then, if all goes well, release!

This release further addresses problems arising from memory limitations. It automatically scales images down when loading them into memory.

Posted images are also scaled, to a maximum size of 1024 pixels on the longest side.

If there any problems with the new version, as always, post details here, and I will certainly respond.

I released PostBot 1.0.0 for Android today!

It’s my first Android app, and I’m fairly happy with it. There are many features I’d like to add, of course, but for now PostBot allows me to easily post photos from my phone to my blog for friends and family to see.

I’m very impressed with Android in general, and the SDK specifically. Not only is it completely open, and supports non-Windows developers as first-class citizens, but it is very well-executed. It seems as if my every need has been anticipated by Google.

I hope PostBot 1.0.0 is useful to people, and that it is the first of many Android application releases for me.
